Perspectives for articulatory speech synthesis

Articulatory speech synthesis currently has two perspectives. (i) Technical perspective: Due to progress in common computer hardware (general increase in computation rate) and software (usability of compilers and simulation software) it is now possible to develop comprehensive phonetic models of speech production reaching nearly real-time for the calculation of acoustic speech signals. Furtherm...

A New Algorithm for Voice Activity Detection Based on Wavelet Packets (RESEARCH NOTE)

Speech constitutes much of the communicated information; most other perceived audio signals do not carry nearly as much information. Indeed, much of the non-speech signals maybe classified as ‘noise’ in human communication. The process of separating conversational speech and noise is termed voice activity detection (VAD). This paper describes a new approach to VAD which is based on the Wavelet ...

Session 2aSC: Linking Perception and Production (Poster Session) 2aSC47. Acoustic and articulatory information as joint factors coexisting in the context sequence model of speech production

This simulation study presents the integration of an articulatory factor into the Context Sequence Model (CSM) (Wade et al., 2010) of speech production using Polish sonorant data measured with the Electromagnetic Articulograph technology (EMA) (Mücke et al., 2010). Based on exemplar-theoretic assumptions (Pierrehumbert 2001), the CSM models the speech production-perception loop operating on a s...

An articulatory study of emotional speech production

Few studies exist on the topic of emotion encoding in speech in the articulatory domain. In this report, we analyze articulatory data collected during simulated emotional speech production and investigate differences in speech articulation among four emotion types; neutral, anger, sadness and happiness. The movement data of the tongue tip, the jaw and the lower lip, along with speech, were obta...

A Novel Self-organising Speech Production System Using Pseudo-articulators

A novel articulatory speech production system which is stochastically trained from a pre-specified initialisation state is presented. The target positions for a set of pseudo-articulators and the mapping from these to output speech spectral vectors are jointly optimised using linearised Kalman filtering and an assembly of neural networks. The techniques used to initialise and train the system a...

Knowledge from Speech Production Used in Speech Technology: Articulatory Synthesis*

There appears to be a continuing trend toward incorporating knowledge of speech production into s~eech technology-text-to-speech synthesis (e.g., BIckley, Stevens, & Williams, 1994; Parthasarthy & Coker, 1992), low bit rate coding (see Schroeter & Sondhi, 1992), and automatic speech recognition (e.g., Rose, Schroeter, & Sondhi, 1994; Shirai & Kobayashi, 1986). For automatic speech recognition, ...
